Debden Park School, Loughton, Essex

An award winning PFI scheme and benchmark in the development of current thinking and guidance on secondary school design.

High standards were set in the design and implementation of the external areas. The proposals aimed to create a setting for the school with an emphasis on the hidden curriculum and the need to encourage involvement and ownership of the design, and the management of the grounds, by pupils and staff.

Landscape appraisal, master plan, planning application, detailed design and site inspection were completed for the new school, which was constructed on a greenfield site adjacent to the London Metropolitan Green Belt.

The proposal included a terraced all weather pitch, tennis courts and grass sports field pitches, with an extensive cut and fill exercise to accommodate these facilities. Funding from Learning Through Landscapes and Art in Architecture enabled some unusual features to be incorporated, adding to the interest of the external areas.

The project was awarded Best Design Submission in the PPF Awards 2002 and 1st Place in General/Commercial Category of Epping Forest District Council Awards.
